How to Choose the Right Digital Marketing Agency: 8 Things to Look For

Search "best digital marketing agency" and you'll get a wall of listicles, most written by agencies ranking themselves first. Instead of adding another one of those, here's a practical checklist for what to actually look for — whether you end up working with us or someone else.

  1. They ask about your numbers before your channels. A good agency wants to know your average order value, close rate, and current cost per acquisition before they pitch you Google Ads or SEO. If the first conversation is all tactics and no numbers, that's a flag.
  2. They can explain their reporting in one sentence. You should always be able to say "we spent X, we got Y leads, at Z cost each" without needing a 40-tab dashboard explained to you.
  3. They're honest about what won't work fast. SEO takes months. Paid ads can show results in days. Anyone who promises fast SEO wins is either inexperienced or not being straight with you.
  4. They work across channels, not just one. Performance marketing, SEO, and analytics feed each other — an agency that only does one in isolation is optimizing a piece, not the whole funnel.
  5. Pricing is clear and tied to scope. Retainers should map to actual deliverables (campaigns managed, hours of strategy, reporting cadence) — not a vague monthly fee.
  6. They show you real dashboards, not screenshots. Ask for live access to your GA4 and ad accounts. If an agency is hesitant to give you access to your own data, that's worth asking about.
  7. Someone senior is actually on your account. Small businesses especially should ask who will be hands-on day to day — not just who's in the sales call.
  8. They fit your size. A small business doesn't need an enterprise agency's overhead, and a scaling business needs more than a single freelancer can sometimes offer. Match the partner to where you actually are.

If you're currently going through this search yourself, happy to be one of the conversations you have — even if it's just to compare notes on what a fair scope of work looks like.
